Listed are the 13 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Digital Marketing, but before I began, allow me to catch you up! 😜
When I first started digital marketing, I thought all I needed was good content and consistency. Nobody told me there was an entire strategy underneath the content — keywords, funnels, destinations, intent, hooks, target audiences, all of it working together like gears in a clock. I learned that the HARD WAY, one mistake at a time, over months of trial and ERROR.
Then one day it clicked. Not all at once — piece by piece, like finally seeing the picture on a puzzle once enough pieces are in place.
If you’re just getting started or you’ve been at this a while and still feel stuck, these lessons will save you time, money, and a whole lot of frustration. These 13 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Digital Marketing are everything I learned one mistake at a time and months of frustration.

13 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Digital Marketing
1. Posting More Is Not the Same as Posting Smart
I used to think the answer to slow growth was simply doing more. More pins, more posts, more everything. Turns out volume without strategy is just noise. One well-placed piece of content beats ten random ones.
2. Your Keyword Is Your Foundation
Everything you create should circle back to one or two core keywords. Pick the wrong keyword or scatter ten different ones and you’re building a house on sand. Pick the right one and everything else has something solid to stand on.
3. People Buy From People They Trust, Not From Strangers Who Sell
Digital marketing isn’t about shouting louder than everyone else. It’s about becoming a familiar, trusted voice. Trust takes time and consistency to build — there’s no shortcut.
4. A Funnel Is Not Optional
I used to think a funnel was some complicated tech thing for big companies. It’s actually simple: Pin → Blog → Freebie → Email List → Sale. Each step warms someone up a little more. Skip a step, and you lose people along the way.
5. Your First Offer Should Be Free
People won’t hand you money before they know, like, and trust you. A free checklist, guide, or resource is the bridge. Give value first. The sale comes later, and it comes easier.

6. Consistency Beats Perfection Every Time
I spent way too long trying to make every piece of content perfect before posting it. Meanwhile, people who posted “good enough” content consistently outpaced me every time. Done is better than perfect in digital marketing.
7. Your Audience Needs to Be Specific
“Small business owners” is a start. “Small business owners over 50 who feel invisible online and don’t know what to post” is a target. The more specific you get, the more your content feels like it’s speaking directly to one person.
8. ChatGPT Is a Tool, Not a Replacement for Strategy
AI can help you write faster, but it can’t replace knowing your audience, your offer, and your funnel. Garbage strategy in, garbage content out, even with the best AI tool in the world.
9. Alt Tags and Descriptions Matter More Than You Think
This was one of my biggest blind spots in digital marketing. Every image, every pin, every blog post needs proper alt tags and keyword-rich descriptions. It’s not optional SEO fluff — it’s literally how search engines understand what you’re putting out there.
10. Email Marketing Still Works — Maybe Better Than Ever
Social media algorithms change overnight. Your email list doesn’t disappear because a platform changed its rules. Building an email list should be one of your top priorities, not an afterthought.
This is one of the digital marketing lessons most small business owners learn too late.
11. You Don’t Need to Be Everywhere
I tried to be on every platform at once and burned out fast. Pick one or two platforms where your people actually hang out and go deep instead of wide. Mastery beats scattered effort.
12. Data Tells You What’s Actually Working
Feelings lie. Data doesn’t. Check your analytics regularly and let the numbers guide what you create more of and what you let go of. Don’t keep doing something just because you like making it if it’s not converting.
13. Digital Marketing Is a Long Game, Not a Sprint
Nobody builds a thriving digital marketing presence overnight, no matter what the success stories on Pinterest make it look like. It’s months of consistent, strategic effort before momentum kicks in. Stay the course.

These 13 lessons took me months to learn through trial and error. You don’t have to learn them the same way. Start with the Pre-Post Planning Checklist — it’s free, and it puts structure behind everything you create from here on out.
Don’t skip this step. It’s the difference between guessing and growing.
